UVGI (Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation) System in Air Handling Units of HVAC.

Bacteria, mould, spores, fungus, and viruses like the novel Coronavirus grow rapidly inside the Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and get distributed all over the premise through the air-conditioning ducts. This makes the environment infectious, unhealthy, and unsafe, without us realizing it.

Research has shown that places like shopping malls, hospitals, commercial spaces, IT Parks, and schools are exposed to similar unhealthy environments, and that can heighten health issues including congestion, headaches, upper respiratory ailments, flu and the novel coronavirus which is responsible for the COVID -19 pandemic.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is electromagnetic radiation which is used to disinfect (kill) microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, yeast, mould, and fungi. It is a non-chemical technology with no residual by-products. The use of short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms has been an accepted disinfection method since the middle of the 20th century.

The use of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) within an air handling unit (AHU) is growing rapidly. Typically, UV lamps are installed for one of two reasons. In one application, high levels of UV light are installed in the AHU ducting for disinfection of microbes in moving air streams. In another very popular application UVC light is installed close the air conditioning coil and drain pan to prohibit microbial growth (bacteria and mould) from fouling the coil and drain pan

UVC rays disrupt the reproduction cycle of germs by attacking their DNA. It's an environment-friendly and efficient way to remove mould and bacteria from coils and drain pan surfaces.

The Advantage

  • Eliminates up to 99.9% of mould spores and kills up to 87% of certain airborne bacteria passing through the air system

  • Maintains system efficiency and airflow, which

saves money by not having to have your system coils cleaned as often

  • Increases productivity and helps reduce absenteeism due to illness

  • Highly recommended by many credible organizations like the Government and the ASHRAE, for killing microbes and improving Indoor Air Quality

Energy Saving due to Clean Coils

UVGI Systems ensure deep cleaning of coils in the most eco-friendly & safe way. There is no worry of damage to coils, which can be possible with chemical and scrubbing methods.

UVGI Systems proactively remove the bio-films (layer of slimy, sticky substance that comprises the mixture of bacteria, mould, etc.), thus ensuring that the air does not get contaminated through the coil and drain pans.

Mould and bacteria built up on cooling coils reduce the space between the fins and increase the pressure drop through the coil, resulting in a higher operating cost of AHU fans. UVC rays from UVGI Systems eliminate the mould and bacteria on fins and provide greater savings on fan operation. UVC rays keep coils clean, which also means lesser coil maintenance.

Clairco’s Germicidal UVGI systems are designed to implement the ASHRAE- suggested general strategy guidelines. The high output UVGI is a powerful tool for reducing the spread of contaminants at the source.

Case study and comparisons of before and after swab at our two client locations, prove the effectiveness of Clairco’s UVGI systems.
